Getting there
From AIBD: 55 km, 1 h to 1 h 20 on the motorway then the VDN and the Ngor road. From the Plateau: 16 km, 30 min on a clear road, an hour at peak times; taxi 3,000-5,000 CFA. Dakar Dem Dikk buses stop on the route des Almadies, ten minutes' walk from the village. Pirogues to the island leave the village beach all day until 6 pm — after that you negotiate a special crossing. No car gets into the village itself: expect to finish on foot with your bags for anything from a hundred to three hundred metres.
Your host, Awa
My family has harvested salt on the north shore for three generations; I run the camp, six rooms and a mango tree. I am up at six for the bread, and I can take you to see the harvest before the coaches from Dakar arrive. In the evening there is nobody left but us, the birds and the dogs.

- Le poulet yassa avec du riz et un peu de sel du lac, celui que ma mère met de côté avant que les camions ne passent.

- La crête de dune entre le lac et l'océan, à sept heures du matin. On voit les deux eaux en même temps et on n'entend rien.

- Donner ce qu'on a sans faire d'histoires. Si vous arrivez à quinze heures affamé, on ne vous demandera pas si vous avez réservé le repas.
- What I always recommend
- Dormez une nuit au lieu de venir à la journée. Entre dix-sept heures et neuf heures, le lac ne ressemble à aucune photo que vous avez vue.
