Getting there
From AIBD: 55 km, 1 h to 1 h 20 on the motorway then the VDN and the Ngor road. From the Plateau: 16 km, 30 min on a clear road, an hour at peak times; taxi 3,000-5,000 CFA. Dakar Dem Dikk buses stop on the route des Almadies, ten minutes' walk from the village. Pirogues to the island leave the village beach all day until 6 pm — after that you negotiate a special crossing. No car gets into the village itself: expect to finish on foot with your bags for anything from a hundred to three hundred metres.

I have run a fabric shop on Île Nord for twenty-two years: bazin, wax, lace. The flat above was my mother's; I kept it as it was, with the wooden gallery over the street. I know every tailor in the quarter and the best fishmonger in Guet Ndar. Ask me before you buy anything.

- Le thiéboudieune rouge, celui de Saint-Louis, avec le riz cassé et les légumes entiers. C'est ici qu'il est né, on ne va pas se mentir.

- Le pont Faidherbe à dix-huit heures trente, du côté aval. Tout le monde s'y arrête et personne ne l'avoue.

- Recevoir quelqu'un comme si sa mère allait passer vérifier. Draps propres, eau fraîche, et on demande des nouvelles avant de parler d'argent.
- What I always recommend
- Traversez à Guet Ndar tôt le matin quand les pirogues rentrent, puis revenez déjeuner sur l'île. Et gardez une journée pour le Djoudj entre décembre et mars.
